The iPhone 4S is the iPhone 4!

Updated December 22, 2011

When it comes to issues, that is!

Apple has just gotten past the salutations for the coming of the iPhone 4S, but it seems that consumers are now railing at a number of issues that need attending to. One of these issues is the iPhone 4S’ short battery life (which many tech analysts and Apple fanatics gather as reminiscent of the iPhone 4’s Antenna Gate issue). Indeed, the silence of the tech giant conjures the thought of the what-had-beens when it became temporarily oblivious to the massive protest against the iPhone 4. The issue eventually led to a reputable website withholding its recommendation for those who wanted an iPhone 4.

Last week, the iPhone 4S users herded to Apple’s support site to complain about the short battery life of the device. This is against Apple’s claim about the gadget’s battery life span shown on its advertisements. The issue showed up despite the iPhone 4S being on sale mid-October.

The ads say that the new Apple smartphone trumps the iPhone 4 by an additional hour of 3G talk time, yet users complain about a massive decline in battery life when it comes to its standby mode- the time the battery is able to power the phone when it is not being used. And the margin that is lost is a legendary 100 hours!

The people even say that their handsets literally run out of juice even if they bring them to work with minimal usage.

Isn’t it safe to conclude that the iPhone 4S is no different from its predecessor- the iPhone 4? Let’s review what happened with a similar issue with the iPhone 4.

At that time, iPhone 4 owners posted videos holding the phone tightly on its right side, showing the phone losing its reception. Later on, the verdict judged that it was certainly a hardware glitch. Surprisingly, Apple didn’t give it much attention until three weeks later, holding instead a press conference to show to the naïve customers that ‘antennagate’, with a flux of supporting data, was something other phones also experienced. Clearly, it wasn’t just Apple who had it.

The other inevitable question is: Is it too soon to compare Apple’s deliberate delayed reaction this time around to what happened last year with the iPhone 4’s Antenna Gate Scandal? Not quite, I guess.

I believe people are committing what we call a ‘fundamental attribution error’. Meaning, we classify something on the basis of an unfounded generalization. The iPhone 4S may lack the supposedly additional hundred hours of standby time, but it doesn’t necessarily follow that the culprit is a hardware flaw.

Inasmuch as Apple maintains its usual silent stance before making an effective move, it is best to assume that the adverse effect springs up because of the iOS 5- the major software release that puts Apple products ahead by adding on a number of new features to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 hardware.

It is not that the software is haphazardly created. The facts would tell otherwise: Apple has actually spent a considerable amount of time developing the software and running near public testing sessions before delivering it to the swarming Apple iPhone fanatics. Let’s not pull our punches here: it has no bugs.

This is not to cover up Apple. Nor have I any inclination to do that. No matter how informed the consumers are this is still an issue that needs addressing. After all, they are the ones who are running a business.

I don’t have the right to not recommend the iPhone 4S. I would be lying to myself if I did. I mean, the iPhone 4S is an amazing device and it is still worth our money! What with all those functionalities and such.
