Selling your iPad 2: Is it Worth it?

Updated December 22, 2011

When the iPad was unveiled around early 2010, tablet computers only occupied a small portion of the technology world. After the release though, tablet computers suddenly became the hottest gadget in town. The iPad dominated the tablet computer market, with its large array of applications, from games to business-related programs.

Then other manufacturers started to create their own tablet computers. They saw the possibility of the tablet computer and what it held for the future of computers in general. Everyone suddenly wanted one. From kids to businessmen, tablet computers were suddenly found everywhere. Companies such as Samsung and Sony have their own computer tablets out now. These alternatives have also proven to be popular among consumers. But is selling your iPad 2 worth it just to try these alternatives? Undoubtedly so.

Just as the iPad 2 has been met with praise, it has received criticism as well. Screen problems such as black pixels are an eyesore for people. Backlight bleeding is also one of the main concerns of the iPad 2. Since it may also become obsolete as time goes by, selling your iPad 2 is something you need to think about.

You can shop for other tablet computers online before selling your iPad 2. Products such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab are the most popular computer tablets aside from the iPad 2. Other tablets have high quality cameras as well. The underperforming camera of the iPad 2 is one reason to think about selling your iPad 2. You still have to use iTunes to get it to work, and it still can’t be used as an independent computer. You still need a desktop computer or a MacBook to get it to start up.

Chances are if you own an iPad, you own an iPad 2 also. Consider selling your iPad since the iPad 2 performs better, but there are still problems. The hefty price of the iPad and iPad 2 are also one of the main criticisms. You could get a lot more in selling your iPad. Some computer tablets are cheaper, and you could get more value for your money if you look for better alternatives.

Some computer tablets offer more applications than the iPad 2. If applications are one of the reasons for buying an iPad or iPad 2, then consider browsing the applications offered by other manufacturers. They could help you decide if you should be selling your iPad or not.

The iPad 2 also doesn’t support the Adobe Flash player inherently. That means you still have to download it onto your iPad, whereas some tablets already come with this feature.

Also, the large size of the iPad is something to consider. While on a ride home, or on a shopping mall, using it will make you a target for thieves. While we know that people love to show off their latest gadgets in public, and the iPad is no exception. They can be easily stolen because of their large size, and their expensive price makes it a prime target for criminals too. Consider selling your iPad for something smaller if you need to use it in public. Otherwise, selling your iPad is the way to go.

Also, the FaceTime application is not popular among users. Combined with subpar cameras and a shaky Internet connection, selling your iPad might be the only way to get some of your money back.

The depreciation value of the iPad 2 is also very quick. When the iPad 2 was released, prices for the original iPad quickly went down. If you want to explore and purchase other tablet computers, selling your iPad 2 now would be a sound decision.

The reason why the iPad is dominating the market is because of the brand strength that Apple possesses. We barely see any advertisements about other tablet computers, but there are actually plenty out there. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one of them, but other like the Motorola Xoom are actually good alternatives.

Also, the iPad 2 only has a 3G option. While it touts the latest advances in technology, it should have the latest features as well. Having a 4G option would certainly increase its longevity in the market, but sadly this is not so.

And last but not the least, it cannot replace a good old fashioned computer.  While it looks like the iPad is a promising future for computers, that future is still far away.
